The ongoing conflict in Ukraine is prompting concerns among some analysts about broader regional stability, particularly for EU and NATO member states bordering Russia. As Kyiv continues to launch deep strikes into Russian territory, a notable Russian dissident has warned that this pressure could lead Moscow to test the West's collective defense.

Garry Kasparov, a former chess grandmaster and outspoken critic of Vladimir Putin, has suggested that Russia's next potential military action could be an incursion into the Baltic region. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are all EU and NATO member states, meaning an attack on any of them would trigger Article 5 of the NATO treaty, obligating all members to come to their defense.

Kasparov’s prediction highlights a recurring concern among security analysts: that the Kremlin might seek to challenge NATO's commitment to its Article 5 collective defense principle. Such a move would significantly escalate the current geopolitical tensions and directly involve Western military forces.

From Ukraine's perspective, its recent deep strikes into Russian territory are seen as a strategic tool to gain leverage. These actions aim to disrupt Russian military operations and put pressure on Moscow, potentially influencing future peace negotiations.

However, this strategy is viewed differently by some. Kasparov argues that instead of pushing Russia toward talks, increased pressure could provoke a more aggressive response, potentially targeting other vulnerable areas along Russia's borders with NATO.

The three Baltic states, given their historical ties to the Soviet Union and their current membership in both the EU and NATO, are often seen as a potential flashpoint. Their geographic location, bordering Russia and its ally Belarus, makes them strategically significant.

Should such an incursion occur, it would represent a dramatic shift in the conflict, expanding it beyond Ukraine's borders and creating an unprecedented security crisis for Europe. NATO has consistently reiterated its commitment to defending all its members, but a direct confrontation with Russia in the Baltics would test this resolve severely.

This warning underscores the complex and unpredictable nature of the current geopolitical climate, where actions in one theater of conflict can have wide-ranging implications for international security and the stability of the European continent.
